A watch retailer that wants known brands buys from the brand's authorised distributor, an authorised wholesaler, or an independent sourcing agent, because branded manufacturers rarely sell to shops directly. A retailer that wants its own brand buys from an OEM watch manufacturer instead.
We are DOT ME INTERNATIONAL, an independent watch sourcing agent in Dubai. Buyers often ask us whether they should go "straight to the manufacturer" to get a better price. This guide explains why that rarely works for branded watches, and how to choose the right supplier for what you actually want to sell.
How the watch supply chain works
Branded watches usually move through a fixed chain:
- Brand and manufacturer. The brand makes the watches, or has them made, and controls where and how they are sold.
- Regional office or authorised distributor. Each country or region has an official importer, either the brand's own subsidiary or a contracted distributor.
- Authorised wholesalers and retailers. The distributor supplies approved shops, chains, department stores and online sellers.
Alongside this chain sits the independent trade: traders and sourcing agents who buy genuine stock from different markets and supply buyers that the official chain does not serve, or does not serve with the models they need.
The four types of supplier compared
| Supplier | What they offer | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Watch manufacturer (OEM) | Watches made to your design under your own brand name | Cannot sell you Casio, Seiko or other brands; you carry design, minimum runs and quality control |
| Authorised distributor | Official stock, local warranty, marketing support, steady supply | Account approval, minimum orders, set ranges; popular models can be allocated |
| Authorised wholesaler | Smaller quantities from official stock | Higher prices than the distributor; same allocation limits |
| Independent sourcing agent | Specific models and volumes from several markets, several brands in one order, one contact | Not brand-authorised; you must check origin, documents and import rules for your market |
Why "buy direct from the manufacturer" rarely works for brands
Searching for "wrist watch manufacturers" usually leads to factories, not brands. That is because brand owners protect their pricing and distribution. Casio, Seiko, Citizen and Swiss brands sell through their own regional offices and contracted distributors, not to individual shops that contact the factory.
Watch out
A "factory" that offers branded watches directly, at prices well below trade, is almost always selling counterfeits. Genuine branded stock does not leave the factory through side doors.
OEM manufacturers are the right choice only when you want to build your own watch brand. Then you are buying design, production and quality control, and you are responsible for the brand, compliance and after-sales.
When the authorised distributor is the right choice
- You want a long-term account with one brand in one country.
- Your customers expect the local manufacturer warranty.
- You can meet the distributor's account requirements and minimum orders.
- You are happy with the range the distributor carries for your market.
When a sourcing agent is the right choice
- The models you need are allocated or out of stock in your local channel.
- You need specific references or colourways your local range does not carry.
- You want several brands in one order, for example Casio with Seiko, Citizen or Tissot.
- You sell in several countries and want one contact for sourcing, documents and shipping.
The question is not who is cheapest. It is who can supply the exact models you sell, with paperwork you can stand behind.
What to check with any supplier
- Which company issues the invoice, and where is it registered?
- Where was the stock first sold, and can it be resold in my market?
- Can I see photos of the actual units, including the case back?
- Which documents come with the shipment?
- What happens if units arrive faulty or wrong?
Import rules
In the EU and EEA, genuine goods first sold outside the EEA can need the brand owner's consent before they are imported and resold. Rules elsewhere differ. Check with a customs broker or trademark adviser in your market before ordering through any channel outside the official one.
How we fit in
DOT ME INTERNATIONAL is an independent sourcing agent, not an authorised distributor of any brand. Casio is our core sourcing strength, and we also source Tissot, Rado, Longines, Seiko, Orient and Citizen subject to availability. If your distributor can supply what you need, use them. If they cannot, send us your references, quantities and destination, and we will tell you what is available and on what terms.

Questions buyers ask
Can a retailer buy watches directly from the manufacturer?
For branded watches, usually not. Brands such as Casio, Seiko and Citizen sell through their regional offices and authorised distributors. Factories sell directly only when you order watches under your own brand.
What is the difference between a watch distributor and a wholesaler?
A distributor is the official importer for a brand in a country or region. A wholesaler buys from the distributor and resells smaller quantities to shops.
What does a watch sourcing agent do?
A sourcing agent works for the buyer: it finds genuine branded stock in several markets, confirms it, and manages the offer, documents and shipment. It is not the brand's authorised distributor.
Is a cheap branded watch from a factory genuine?
Almost never. Genuine branded stock moves through the brand's own channels; branded watches offered by a factory far below trade prices are usually counterfeit.
